What is Go?

Go is the oldest board game in the world. The rules are very simple, and you can learn them in a few minutes. It takes simple elements -- line and circle, black and white, stone and wood, but leads to a countless number of intriguing patterns and clever maneuvers.

Go is a game of strategy. Two players compete in acquiring territory by placing stones on a wooden board with a simple grid drawn on it, usually 19 by 19 lines.  Each player places a new stone on the board alternately, seeking to enclose territory with the placed stones. Further, each player may capture the opponent's stones.   The objective of the game is to enclose the most territory, a simple goal that leads to the elegant and fascinating complexities of Go.

Go originated in China about 4000 years ago.   It is known as Weiqi in China, Baduk in Korea and Igo in Japan and Westerners shortened the Japanese term Igo to Go for obvious reasons.  Today there are millions of Go enthusiasts in Asia and throughout the world. Top players participate in professional leagues, and championship matches draw large television audiences. Its popularity in the United States continues to grow, more than fifty years after the founding of the American Go Association (www.usgo.org). With the creation of the internet, amateurs from all over the world can now meet each other for games while in their own homes and watch professional players compete.
